During the perinatal period, women face an increased risk of mental health problems, especially in
situations of extreme stress, conflict or emergencies. It has been suggested that the quality of care
during childbirth and postpartum may significantly influence perinatal well-being. In order to find
which variables related to childbirth and postpartum care are associated with depressive symptoms,
a cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 1,954 women mothers of babies under 6
months of age. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive
symptomatology and the Spanish version of the Coronavirus Perinatal Experiences - Impact Survey
was used to assess the experience of health care. The results obtained indicate that change in birth
planning from vaginal to induction or cesarean section, lack of access to breastfeeding support or
postnatal help after hospital discharge, inability to obtain desired contraception, and lack of
opportunity to discuss mood-related problems are predictors of postpartum depression. These data
highlight the importance of professional support and underscore crucial points for preventive
interventions. The aim is to guide strategies and protocols in relation to perinatal health, especially
in emergency contexts. Emphasizing the need for interventions that strengthen the autonomy and
confidence of mothers during this crucial period.
