Introduction: during vaginal delivery, there is a possibility that the woman may suffer perineal
trauma, either due to intentional causes, such as episiotomy, or due to spontaneous causes such as
perineal tears, or a combination of both. These types of injuries can produce short or long-term
consequences, such as: bleeding, pain, infections, urinary incontinence (UI) or fecal incontinence (FI),
pelvic organ prolapses (POP), dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse) or even psychological
problems such as low self-esteem, fear of sexual relations, pregnancy or childbirth.
Objectives: conduct a literature search on physical therapy techniques used to prevent episiotomy and
vaginal tear during childbirth.
Material and methods: an in-depth bibliographic search was carried out in the following databases:
PubMed, Cochrane, Science Direct and Scopus. Filters were applied that limited the results to articles
published in the last 10 years, and that were classified as trials or clinical studies.
Results: 14 relevant articles were selected for the research work in which physiotherapeutic
techniques were used during pregnancy and during childbirth, obtaining positive results regarding the
prevention of episiotomy and perineal tear during childbirth.
Conclusion: physiotherapy is an effective tool to prevent perineal trauma during childbirth. Pregnant
women are recommended to consult with a pelvic floor physiotherapist for individualized advice.
