Introduction: Tendinopathies represent a significant problem for modern society. High-load strength
exercise is the gold standard treatment for this pathology, but some populations are unable to tolerate
it. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training involves reducing venous return during exercise through
mechanical compression. Combined with low-load strength exercise, it can yield benefits similar to
high-load training due to the effects produced by BFR.
Objectives: To understand, through scientific literature, the effect of BFR training on tendinopathies,
as well as its parameters for effective and safe application in this condition.
Materials and Methods: A search for articles was conducted in the databases PubMed, PEDro,
SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, MedlinePlus, and Cochrane.
Results: Six studies were included: three of them are case series; the other three are clinical trials. All
address the efficacy of low-load strength training combined with BFR in patients with tendinopathies.
Two of them address patellar tendinopathy, one rotator cuff tendinopathy, one gluteal tendinopathy,
and two lateral epicondyle tendinopathy.
Conclusions: There is evidence on the use of low-load BFR to produce significant improvements in
pain intensity and strength values in various tendinopathies. It could be a useful tool in treating
patients who cannot tolerate high loads, but further research is needed.
