Pioneros del arte efímero: Los artistas de Les Fogueres de Sant Joan entre 1928 y 1936

Abstract

El presente trabajo es fruto de una investigación centrada en analizar la labor de aquellos artistas que formaron parte de la fiesta de Les Fogueres de Sant Joan, en Alicante, en sus primeros nueve años de vida. Los que fueron, por tanto, pioneros de este arte efímero en la ciudad. En él se realiza una búsqueda bibliográfica sobre la producción de cada uno de ellos, teniendo como objeto fundamental su trayectoria y la influencia que tuvo su obra en un momento de exploración de un arte que solo tenía el precedente de las Fallas de Valencia. De esta manera, se comienza con una explicación de los orígenes de la fiesta, que ofrece al lector una contextualización histórica y sociocultural de su creación. Se explica cómo se gestó su nacimiento en 1928 y quiénes fueron los primeros artistas que se introdujeron en el oficio hasta su interrupción en 1936. Como continuación, se explica la información que hay recogida a este respecto en diversas publicaciones de la fiesta, muchas con lagunas y erratas, que con este trabajo pretenden ser completadas o subsanadas en la mayor medida posible, gracias a cotejar la documentación oficial conservada en el Archivo Municipal y las diversas publicaciones que tratan el tema, comparando y tratando de solucionar las controversias existentes. En ese sentido, se dividen los nueve años tratados en dos períodos diferenciados, 1928- 1930, y 1931-1936. De cada uno de ellos se explica el contexto sociopolítico, los apuntes estéticos más relevantes y los temas tratados en las obras que plantaron cada uno de los artistas. Esta explicación se completa con un listado de cada uno de los artesanos que contribuyeron a la fiesta, con su biografía correspondiente y el listado de todos los monumentos con los que contribuyeron. Por último, el trabajo concluye con un análisis de la importancia que tuvo la labor de estos artesanos pioneros en el devenir de la fiesta, en el ámbito estético y temático, así como la importancia de reunir y actualizar estos datos. Mediante los distintos apartados y la reflexión final, el lector comprenderá la importancia del trabajo de los pioneros y su importancia para el devenir de la fiesta en sus primeros años de desarrollo.

The present work is the result of an investigation focused on analyzing the work of those artists who were part of the “Les Fogueres de Sant Joan de Alicante” festival in its first nine years of existence, thus being pioneers of this ephemeral art in the city. It conducts a bibliographic search on the production of each of them, with their trajectory and the influence of their work being the fundamental objective during a time of exploration of an art that only had the precedent of the “Fallas” in Valencia. The document begins with an explanation of the origins of the festival, providing the reader with a historical and sociocultural contextualization of its creation. It explains how it begun in 1928 and who were the first artists to engage in the craft until its interruption in 1936. Furthermore, it explains the information collected on this subject in various festival publications, many of which have gaps and errors. This work aims to complete or rectify them to the greatest extent possible by cross-referencing the official documentation preserved in the Municipal Archive and the various publications dealing with the subject, comparing, and attempting to resolve existing controversies. In this regard, the nine years covered are divided into two distinct periods, 1928-1930, and 1931-1936. For each of them, the sociopolitical context, the most relevant aesthetic notes, and the themes addressed in the fogueres made by each artist are explained. This explanation is complemented by a list of each of the craftsmen who contributed to the festival, along with their corresponding biographies and the list of all the monuments they contributed to. Finally, the work concludes with an analysis of the importance of the work of these pioneering craftsmen in the evolution of the festival, both aesthetically and thematically, as well as the importance of gathering and updating this data. Through the different sections and the final reflection, the reader will understand the meaning of the pioneers' work and its importance for the evolution of the festival to the present day.
