World Youth Day (WYD) is a massive event promoted by the Catholic Church that has brought young people from all over the world to meet the Pope every four years since 1984. This event has evolved to bring together one and a half million people in August 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.
For this reason, this dissertation examines in detail how the combination of various media has managed to capture the attention of a generation seeking answers to their spiritual concerns. A crucial aspect addressed in this research is the paradigm shift in the perception of religion among young people. In a context where religious institutions seem to be in decline, there is a resurgence of interest in faith among young people, especially in the Catholic religion. This renewed spiritual interest is expressed in active participation in new evangelisation movements and faith communities.
This dissertation analyses how World Youth Day has become crucial in this process, serving as a space where young people can find a point of reference and a community for sharing their concerns, as WYD provides a perfect environment to grow spiritually and encourage religious identity.
The case of study has been carried out by analysing the role of WYD's communication strategy in adapting religious messages to today's diverse context. It looks at marketing techniques, the use of social media and visual storytelling to reach new audiences, as well as to transmit religious values in a coherent and accessible way to new generations.
Finally, this study brings up the need to continue exploring new forms of communication and evangelisation that responds to the needs of a generation of young believers seeking to find meaning in their lives in an ever-changing world.
