Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common endocrinological and
reproductive conditions in women. Among its most characteristic signs are
menstrual irregularities, acne, hirsutism, obesity and infertility. The Evidence-
Based International Guideline recommends the use of the Rotterdam criteria for
the diagnosis of PCOS. According to the presence or absence of three elements
(oligoanovulation, hyperandrogenism and ovarian morphology alteration), PCOS
is classified into four phenotypes. The management of PCOS is quite complex,
and treatments are personalized depending on the symptoms and signs.
The main objective of this study is to conduct a literature review on nonpharmacological
treatments for the management of polycystic ovary syndrome
symptoms. This search was conducted in the Medline database.
It has been found that the use of non-pharmacological therapies for the treatment
of this syndrome helps control its symptoms by improving glucose metabolism,
hormonal levels and patient’s quality of life.
It can be concluded that these supplements, along with a healthy lifestyle, serve
as adjuvants to pharmacological treatment, and in exceptional cases when
pharmacological treatment is contraindicated, improvement in the course of this
syndrome may be achieved. Nevertheless, further research is needed on the
subject to reach definitive conclusions regarding doses and benefits.
