The video game industry has established itself as one of the main entertainment industries worldwide. However, women still lack safe spaces to pursue their hobby and often report unpleasant and sexist experiences. The toxic attitude of male gamers and the harassment that women constantly receive in online spaces makes many of them perceive the world of video games as a hostile space where they’re not welcome. “Go make me a sandwich,” “ugh a woman,” and even threats against their physical integrity are the constant insults that female gamers encounter every day while playing. Furthermore, the video game industry lacks representative female figures. On many occasions the fictions presented in this medium are incapable of offering a realistic, inclusive and dignified image of women. This also relates to the little female presence in the sector, since female characters and stories are always told from a male perspective. Women face multiple challenges when entering the industry as well, as university degrees and jobs are very male oriented. Their own experience playing video games can make them second guess when it comes to choosing video games as a career.
