Abstract:

The lack of a gender perspective in the diagnostic criteria suggests that the difference in prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in men versus women has been overestimated. This translates into late diagnoses in women and higher levels of depression and anxiety, among other consequences. In addition, intervention programs are adjusted to a greater extent to male symptomatology. Therefore, a specific intervention program for women with ASD is proposed with the aim of minimizing the health impact of late diagnosis and promoting the development of more adaptive behaviours in the different areas in the participants' lives. The program is composed of 10 sessions: 2 dedicated to assessment and 8 to intervention, with specific information about ASD in women, the consequences of "masking", social skills training, and management of anxious and depressive symptoms, among other issues. Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, problem solving, Socratic dialogue and exposure are used. The novelty of this program comes from the addition of a gender perspective applied to the aforementioned contents and methods of intervention. In addition, a series of pre and post-test tools are proposed in order to evaluate its effectiveness.
