The aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review on the psychosocial and mental health factors that affect ED during the experience and development of pregnancy and postpartum. The systematic review was carried out through the PRISMA protocol, making use of the PsycInfo and Pubmed databases. The search resulted in 9 articles, whose quality was analyzed using 10 risk of bias criteria. In general terms, the different studies showed a strong association between ED and depressive and anxiety symptoms in the different trimesters of pregnancy and postpartum, taking these variables as risk factors. In addition, it was evidenced that maladaptive beliefs or attitudes towards maternity and pregnancy showed significant results from the second to the third trimester, thus increasing ED during these periods. Likewise, a significant relationship between the psychosocial variables, self-compassion, social support and self-esteem variables during pregnancy and postpartum was noticed, with these factors having positive effects for both periods. It was concluded that, although the results of the different studies indicated that certain factors could have an effect on ED, in other psychosocial variables such as satisfaction in the couple relationship, clear conclusions could not be drawn due to contradictory and inconclusive results, for this makes it necessary to develop more prospective studies and the need to carry out relevant interventions to prevent the development or increase of ED during the perinatal and postpartum stage.
