Introduction: Health anxiety (HA) shows a significant increase in recent years in our country. People with HA express a dysfunctional concern towards healthy behaviors, however, there are few studies that analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and health anxiety in the general Spanish population. Objective: To analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and health anxiety, while observing the intention to change in consumers. Method: Descriptive cross-sectional study where 204 people from the general Spanish population participated. Sociodemographic variables, perception of risk and health, consumption in the last year, intention to change, perceived self-efficacy for the change and problematic alcohol consumption were evaluated. Results: People with HA alcohol consumption significantly more (p<.05) than those without health anxiety (NOHA). In addition, the NOHA /HA that present a alcohol risk consumption show a greater intention to change compared to those that do not show a risk consumption. However, NOHA/HA people who do not consume at risk show greater self-efficacy to make the change. People who present HA and show risk consumption have a higher perception of risk to alcohol. Conclusions: The results reflect the inconsistency between the intention to change and the self-efficacy of risk consumers regardless of HA. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out studies with a larger sample size that implement intervention techniques focused on increasing self-efficacy. In addition, it is recommended to carry out longitudinal studies that confirm the results obtained.
