Introduction. Funeral rites are events that have been taking place in humanity for centuries. In the beginning, these events were held in the home of the deceased, later, they began to be practiced in places specialized in the care and hygiene of the deceased. The people who oversee this job are called tanatopractors, in charge of cleaning, disinfecting, preserving, and fixing the deceased person. These professionals work in places that are impregnated with negative feelings such as sadness, despair, loneliness, etc. For this reason, they are prone to suffering psychosocial illnesses since there is not much help and support for this sector. The diseases that can suffer the most are compassion fatigue, stress, secondary trauma, anxiety, or burnout syndrome. In addition, during 2020 and 2022, the deaths caused by coronavirus infections caused the funeral homes and their workers to overflow, which negatively affected their mental health. The scientific literature shows a lack of resources and initiatives aimed at promoting the development of adaptive coping strategies specifically oriented to professionals in the funeral sector. Objective. The present work has been prepared to design an intervention program to promote the use of adaptive coping strategies among the staff of funeral services and the provision of peer support in highly stressful situations typical of their work environment. Method. The bibliographical review has shown that professionals in the funeral sector lack emotional support and, therefore, 41.1% of them suffer from burnout syndrome and 43.5% from secondary trauma. The program to be implemented is intended to help professionals in the funeral sector through information and techniques that allow them to develop strategies to deal with emotionally difficult situations. Intervention. The program is aimed at workers in crematorium funeral homes in the province of Alicante. It consists of 10 weekly sessions, each lasting 2 hours, which will take place between September and October 2023. The sessions are divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The information in the theoretical part of the program deals with occupational risks, detection of support needs, social support, emotional first aid, empathy and active listening, stress management strategies, peer support conversations, specialized resources, and communication skills to interact with the loved ones of the deceased. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, validated questionnaires and others prepared ad hoc will be used, which will be administered before and after the intervention. The variables evaluated include stress, fatigue and compassion satisfaction, burnout, empathy, satisfaction, program attendance, and sick leave. Expected results. With the implementation of the program, it is expected that professionals in the funeral sector develop skills that allow them to face and detect emotionally complex situations on a day-to-day basis. Conclusion. The funeral service carries risks for the mental health of professionals who deal daily with death and the pain it causes in the loved ones of the deceased. The lack of support resources and specific training for coping with emotionally complex situations leaves these professionals without the tools to adaptively face these challenges and the possible loss of well-being associated with them. In this work, an intervention program has been designed that aims to train professionals to manage stress and discomfort derived from their work activity and offer support to those colleagues who need it. This intervention proposal is one of the first in this sector. Future works should evaluate its feasibility and effectiveness, as well as its possible generalization to other geographical areas.
