Introduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating, inflammatory and degenerative disease of the central nervous system. The increase in the life expectancy of the population has as a consequence an increase in the prevalence and the average age of patients affected by MS, thus appearing different comorbidities that influence its natural history. In addition, most of the drugs modified for the disease have not been studied in older patients, therefore their effectiveness and safety in this subgroup of the population is unknown.
Objective. To describe the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients with multiple sclerosis under follow-up at the Demyelinating Diseases clinic of the Hospital General Universitario Dr. Balmis, analyze their treatments and comorbidities and assess whether there are differences in those characteristics between patients older than 65 years and those younger than 55 years.
Methods. A retrospective transversal study of patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis under follow-up in the Demyelinating Diseases specialized consultation of the Neurology Service of the Neurology Service of the Hospital General Universitario Doctor Balmis de Alicante (HGUDB) was carried out.
Results. Patients older than 64 years old tend not to receive treatment or, in the case of receiving it, it is less effective. The most prevalent comorbidities in this population subgroup are cardiovascular ones, which also seem to be more prevalent than in the general population. Likewise, age is also associated with greater disability in multiple sclerosis, and the Charlson index may be a good predictor of this.
