Background: Currently, there is disagreement in choosing the appropriate type of exercise for patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction. Furthermore, the incidence rates are increasing due to the rise in life expectancy. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the correct rehabilitation method to optimize the physical conditions of patients as much as possible. Objectives: Review the benefits and adverse effects of HIIT in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction, comparing them with the effects of other types of exercise and determining if there is an influence on quality of life. Material and methods: A bibliographic review was carried out in three databases: Pubmed, Web of Science and Embase. We got 192 articles and 7 of them were included in our review after checking inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Those articles provide information about benefits and adverse effects of HIIT, in addition to compare them with MCT effects. This type of training has been shown to increase lung VO2, heart ejection power, and aerobic capacity, and decrease arterial pressure, sympathetic activity and arterial stiffness. Conclusions: HIIT provides significant benefits to patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction, but it has not been proven that many of these benefits are significantly superior to those of other types of exercise. Additionally, it has not been conclusively demonstrated that there are changes in quality of life before the completion of a HIIT program. It is expected that more studies on this topic will be published in the coming years.
