Introduction: Shoulder Impingement Syndrome is the most common shoulder pathology, with the
rotator cuff being injured due to causes such as direct impacts or overuse of the rotator cuff. Shoulder
impingement compromises the subacromial space. The treatment of myofascial trigger points in the
infraspinatus muscle is a solution to this problem, by means of dry needling or compression of the
muscle.
Aim: To test the efficacy of infraspinatus myofascial trigger point treatment in patients with Shoulder
Impingement Syndrome.
Material and methods: Bibliographic search was carried out from this year to 20 years ago using the
search equation generated with the keywords and the Boolean operator AND in the databases:
PubMed, PEdro and Cochrane. A total of 27 articles were obtained and after screening, 9 studies were
selected, all of which were evaluated by the PEdro and SCED scales.
Results: The 7 clinical trials, 1 observational study and 1 case report were read, all with a good
methodological quality. The studies recorded an improvement in pain, patient mobility and pain
threshold in the different patients, whether they were treated by dry needling or compression.
Conclusions: Treatment of the infraspinatus is effective as it demonstrates a decrease in pain and
increase in shoulder mobility, not only this but the increase in pain threshold is maintained longer than
when treating other muscles.
