Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Its treatment has evolved over the decades. Currently, cases of mastectomy are increasing. This could have certain consequences for the shoulder joint and its correct functioning.
Objectives: Find the most frequent pathologies in the shoulder joint after mastectomy surgery and what changes are produced in this joint.
Material and methods: A search was carried out in Pubmed and Scopus databases, obtaining a total of 99 results. After excluding the articles that did not match the search requirements, 8 results were obtained, which are the ones included in this bibliographic review.
Results: Immediately after surgery, joint range on both sides is reduced in 30-40% of patients. Similarly, strength is also decreased following a different pattern on each side. Adhesive capsulitis has a prevalence of 3.8% and mastectomy is considered a significant risk factor for developing it. The presence of lymphedema produces a decrease in scapular mobility and, likewise, it is related to higher scores on the Quick-DASH questionnaire. The presence of pain is greater in mastectomized patients and generates compensatory movements to avoid it. These movements together with the changes in the kinematics produced by the treatments create greater damage to the joint. On the other hand, physical activity and therapy have benefits in the functionality and quality of life of patients.
Conclusions: Enough evidence was found to declare that the most common shoulder pathologies are decreased joint range and strength, altered muscle activation, lymphedema, adhesive capsulitis, rotator cuff pathology, as well as pain. The presence of these causes an alteration of both scapular and humeral kinematics, which at the same time generates a predisposition to develop them.
