The importance of native varieties as an important genetic reservoir for the future and their contribution to the maintenance of farmers knowledge make necessary their conservation and characterization. These varieties are the result of a seletion carried out by the farmers, through generations, and they are part of their culture and gastronomy. The growth of native tomato landraces has been displaced by comercial varieties in many parts of the world, due to market demands. The aim of this work was to characterize the management of the native varieties of tomato from the South of Yucatán through the dialogue of knowledge. A prospecting collection of native varieties of tomato was made in the south of Yucatán, three were collected; Rosa p’aak, Abal p’aak and Mooch’ peek’. In addition, in collaboration with a key informa of the NGO Yucatan Seed Guardians, the management of these varieties was characterized in Chacsinkín. Strengths and opportunities for the management of these native varieties were analyzed in this community. To describe the morphological and agronomic diversity, a characterization was carried out in, using the characterization descriptors published by Bioversity International (IPGRI, 1996). From the most remarkable features a varietal sheet of each variety was elaborated. In the SOWT analysis, many strengths and opportunities for the grow of these varieties were found in the community and some recommendations were made to improve weaknesses and threats. From the data collected in the characterization it was concluyed that there is intra and intervarietal differences. The results of the descriptors related to the vegetative part of the plants show few intravarietal differences while those related with the fruits show significant differences between the three varieties studied. They show intervarietal differences for the fruits , with characteristics of fruits (color and predominant form) that well could belong to different varieties. These differences with respect to the fruits within the same variety may be due to the fact that the varieties have been hybridized in a previous multiplication, contamination during the process of seed manipulation, or that, although the tomato is an autogamous plant, it can be pollinated by insects
