Introduction: Improving the quality of care requires a strategy of continuous evaluation and, to this end, the creation and application of quality indicators (QIs) are key elements. QIs allow the activity to be compared with a standard or "goal to be achieved", with the aim of detecting and correcting deficiencies in the care process. In recent years, a negative aspect has been detected in the treatment of elderly patients, including health care. The evaluation of CI in the care of acute poisoning allows us to compare the care process with a standard, detect deficiencies and apply improvements, this will allow us to observe the differences in the care of acute poisoning between the younger and older population. bjectives: To study the demographic data, the degree of compliance with the ICs in acute poisonings in the Hospital ED of the Hospital General Universitario Dr. Balmis in Alicante, and to compare them according to whether the patients are under 65 or 65 or older. Material and methods: Retrospective cohort study, including diagnosed cases of acute poisoning in patients over 14 years of age attended in the service of a tertiary hospital. Demographic variables, type of intoxicants and cause of intoxication, 19 CIs, destination, and the outcome variable being the degree of compliance with the CIs, and the differences in the degree of compliance according to age range (< 65 vs ≥ 65 years) will be collected. Results: 1144 cases were registered, 89.6% (1025 patients) < 65 years and 10.4% (119 patients) ≥ 65 years. The predominant route of exposure was digestive (77.6%). Exposure to the toxicant was predominantly voluntary in those <65 years (48.8%) while in those ≥ 65 years it was accidental (37%). Of all the CIs analysed, we only found significant differences in oxygen therapy (in case of CO poisoning) between the two age groups. Conclusions: We can consider compliance with the CIs as optimal, given that most of them are met in both age groups satisfactorily and without significant differences. Given the results obtained, we do not consider that there are differences in the attendance of intoxicated patients with respect to their age.
