Introduction: Rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT) is a common musculoskeletal disorder that can cause pain and weakness. Although exericse is effective, there is no specific consensus suggesting suggesting one type of exercise over others.
Objectives: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise with elastic bands in the treatment of patients with RCT.
Material and methods: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and EMBASE databases until January 31, 2023. The PEDro scale was used to assess methodological quality, and the Cochrane risk of bias tool was used for bias assessment.
Results: Nine articles were included. Except for one randomized controlled trial (RCT), all studies had high methodological quality but a high risk of bias. There were no significant improvements observed in the SPADI scores, the physical function dimension of the SF-36, or the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). However, there was a significant positive effect seen in the short-term outcomes of EVA and NPRS, as well as in the DASH scores and quality of life questionnaires such as the WORC index and the SF-36 "bodily pain" dimension.
Discussion: Exercise involving elastic bands is effective in improving shoulder function, pain intensity, and quality of life in patients with RCT. However, further studies with stronger methodological designs are needed to establish definitive conclusions.
