Abstract:
Los pacientes psiquiátricos presentan un mayor riesgo de muerte prematura asociada, en la mayoría de los casos, debido a la presencia de distintas comorbilidades, destacando las enfermedades cardiovasculares. Psychiatric patients have an increased risk of premature death associated, in most cases, with the presence of various comorbidities, most notably cardiovascular disease. Paraoxonase 1 enzyme is characterised by protective properties against lipid oxidation, inflammation and teratogenesis, having lactonase, arylesterase and paraoxonase activities. For the collection of clinical information, the database of the Dr. Esquerdo social assistance centre, HISCLIPA, was used. Statistical analysis of the data obtained was performed using the freely available programme R statistics ver 4.2.2. The population of the Dr. Esquerdo centre was characterised using socio-demographic variables. In addition, PON1 enzyme activity was assessed against sex and tobacco consumption. The main pathology among the patients was schizophrenia and the most commonly consumed intoxicants were tobacco and alcohol. 48% of patients had a single diagnosis; 44% had two diagnoses; 8% had 3 comorbidities and only one patient had 4. In terms of enzyme activity, no significant differences were found between men and women, nor between smokers and non-smokers. One of the most relevant limitations of the study was the sample size, so it would be necessary to continue incorporating a larger number of patients into the study.. Future research should adjust for confounding variables and extend the study with multivariate statistical analyses to allow for a more comprehensive analysis of the population data.
