Environmental Criminology is the field of Criminology that analyzes the influence of the physical, social and cultural environment on criminal activity. This approach studies crime as an interaction between offender and victim in a specific space-time framework, that is, criminals commit crimes when they have the opportunity to do so. The historical evolution of Criminology as a science has varied its focus from the traditional postulates focused unilaterally on the offender or the victim, to the more contemporary ones focused on criminal opportunities or the analysis of people's routine or daily activities. The main preventive tool to avoid it is situational prevention that integrates various existing techniques, such as the environmental design of cities, through which the opportunities for committing a criminal act are reduced or limited, seeking to deter potential offenders or criminals. This paper analyzes urban design as an important situational prevention tool that reduces criminal opportunities and influences people's activities and behavior. As an example of urban development design, the growth patterns of the new neighborhoods of Pamplona (Navarra) and the strategies chosen in the city to reduce and eliminate graffiti from its public spaces are analyzed. In summary, Environmental Criminology is a discipline that studies how the environment influences crime and how environmental design can reduce criminal commission. These theories are not exempt from criticism directed towards their theoretical, practical, or ethical aspects. However, it has achieved great benefits due to its remarkable pragmatism, providing short-term results and knowing how to adapt to the continuous development of information and communication technologies (ICT) in areas such as individual and collective security.
