BACKGROUND: Once WHO declared the global outbreak of mpox a public health emergency of international concern on 23 of July 2022 it is relevant to know the profile (risk factors and complications) of infected patients in our area. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of infected mpox virus patients and their associated risk factors. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of a cohort of mpox virus infection patients evaluated for suspected at HUSJA. Clinical and epidemiological characteristics, diagnostic methods, alternative diagnoses, clinical outcomes (complications), and concomitant STIs were collected. RESULTS: 89 of 94 patients evaluated were finally included as they meet inclusion criteria. In 54 cases a mpox microbiologically confirmed diagnosis was obtained. Among studied variables, a statistically significant association was found for mpox infection in MSM patients and those who presented systemic symptoms. However, abdominal symptoms were significantly associated with other pathologies being infrequent in mpox infection. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS: Unlike other series we compared clinical and epidemiological characteristics of confirmed cases with those initially suspected. A high clinical risk profile is defined by MSM patients who presented systemic symptoms regardless of the type or number of skin lesions. Furthermore, gastrointestinal symptoms were inversely correlated with the probability of mpox infection.
