De Louisa May Alcott a Greta Gerwig: la representación de un alter ego feminista en Mujercitas

Abstract

Este estudio es el resultado del análisis de la figura de la escritora Louisa May Alcott y su novela Mujercitas a través del contexto histórico y social del siglo XIX de su país, Estados Unidos. La investigación de la vida de esta gran escritora trata de indagar por qué, pese a que Alcott fuese una sólida feminista, en la actualidad su obra no se considera como tal. Y es que Alcott es un claro ejemplo de la escasa libertad de la que disponían las mujeres en aquella época y de las dificultades a las que se enfrentaban, simplemente, por poseer la ambición de ser independientes. En primera instancia, se presenta la vida de Louisa May Alcott, así como la educación que le aportaron sus padres y la situación familiar de la escritora. Más tarde, se analiza la obra Mujercitas y la relación de esta con la familia Alcott, indagando también en las cartas familiares y las de la propia autora. También, se realiza un repaso de la situación del movimiento feminista en Estados Unidos en pleno siglo XIX y qué ideología prevalecía en la vida de Louisa May Alcott. Asimismo, se analiza la adaptación cinematográfica de Mujercitas de 2019, dirigida por Greta Gerwig, que, contando con que es una clara interpretación de la vida de Alcott, se analiza el punto de vista feminista actual que la directora logró reflejar sin dejar de lado el guion de la obra de Louisa May Alcott. Finalmente, se realiza un análisis de la situación del periodismo del siglo XIX en Estados Unidos para demostrar, mediante artículos de opinión, que Alcott también cumplió con el papel de periodista a lo largo de su vida y que su legado como comunicadora de causas sociales no se debe ignorar.

This study is the result of the analysis of the figure of the writer Louisa May Alcott and her novel Little Women through the historical and social context of the 19th century in her country, the United States. The research into the life of this great writer attempts to investigate why, despite the fact that Alcott was a solid feminist, her work is not considered as such today. Alcott is a clear example of the limited freedom women had at the time and the difficulties they faced because they had the ambition to be independent. First of all, the life of Louisa May Alcott is presented, as well as the education provided by her parents, and the writer’s family situation. Later, the work Little Women and its relationship with the Alcott family is analysed, also exploring the family letters and those of the author herself. Besides, a review is made of the situation of the feminist movement in the United States in the 19th century and what ideology prevailed in the life of Louisa May Alcott. This study also analyses the 2019 film adaptation of Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig, which, counting on the fact that it is a clear interpretation of Alcott’s life, analyses the feminist point of view of the 21st century that the director succeeded in reflecting without leaving Louisa May Alcott’s work aside. Finally, an analysis is made of the situation of 19th century journalism in the United States in order to demonstrate, through opinion articles, that Alcott also fulfilled the role of journalist throughout her life and that her legacy as a communicator of social causes should not be ignored.
