ype 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is currently the most prevalent chronic metabolic disease and a true worldwide epidemic. High calorie consumption and lack of exercise are the key factors contributing to this illness, making nutrition one of the pillars for the prevention and advancement of diabetes.
Regularly occurring times with no calorie intake, or times when a person voluntarily abstains from eating or drinking, are referred to as intermittent fasting (IF). It is crucial for medical professionals and dietitians to ascertain whether IF is a workable dietetic therapy for glycaemic management in individuals with these disorders given the rising prevalence of obesity and, with it, T2DM, throughout the world. However, despite a thorough analysis of the available research on intermittent fasting and T2DM, the results found are not conclusive. Therefore, our main aim with this research will be to evaluate whether the use of intermittent fasting improves glycaemic control in patients with T2DM.
The study design is quantitative and experimental, in which a randomized clinical trial will be employed. The study's participants will be both men and women with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are between the ages of 18 and 65, with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. 140 patients from Health Area VII of the Region of Murcia will comprise the sample for our intervention and will be randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the intervention group. A 12-week intervention will be carried out, during which a control blood test will be conducted to determine the Hb1Ac levels before and after the intervention, and to assess whether the use of intermittent fasting improves glycaemic control in this type of chronic condition.
