Loneliness is a psychological issue that has not been widely addressed in the consumption of alcohol in university students in Mexico. Objetive: determine the relationship between loneliness and alcohol consumption in university students. Methods: correlational study, the final sample was 288 university students from three careers from a Public University of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, the sampling was for convenience. The AUDIT Questionnaire and the UCLA Loneliness Scale were used. Results: The average age was 18.32 (SD = 2.1) years, 52.1% were women and 53.1% were students of health sciences. The 30.2% reported a sensible alcohol consumption, 34% dependent consumption and 35.8% a harmful consumption. Harmful consumption is higher in male students and engineering students (p = <. 05). Women have a higher loneliness score than men (p = <. 05). Loneliness was correlated with the sum of the AUDIT (rs = .329, p = .001). Conclusions: Alcohol consumption was higher in men and in engineering students, women reported greater loneliness and students who perceived greater loneliness had greater alcohol consumption
