Abstract:
INTRODUCCIÓN: El número de infectados por COVID-19 se ha ido multiplicando a lo largo de los meses en
todo el mundo y en paralelo ensayos clínicos de la vacuna contra la COVID-19 fueron puestos en marcha. A

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 infected population has been increasing during last 3 years worldwide. Moreover,
simultaneously COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials were launched. By the end of 2020, FDA authorized emergency
use of two mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. This fast-track vaccine approval has produced a controversial
about their safety and efficacy.
OBJECTIVE: To find out attitudes and perceptions regarding vaccination against COVID-19 disease among a
vulnerable group such as HIV-infected patients.
METHODS: Between June 2, 2021, and March 4, 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional study through a survey
of a high risk of severe COVID-19 such as HIV infected patients in Infectious Diseases Unit (Hospital Clínico
Universitario San Juan, Alicante). For data collection strategy, a non-probabilistic snowball sampling was
adopted. A structured, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire was developed in which questions and
statements were designed to evaluate their attitudes and perceptions about COVID-19 vaccination.
Descriptive and bivariate analysis were performed for obtained data.
RESULTS: Forty-eight participants were recruited, mean age of 51.5 ± 11.9 years. 39 of them (81.3%) were
male. Acceptance rate of COVID-19 vaccination was extremely high (95.7%). Bivariate analysis showed older
patients received significantly a higher proportion of vaccine doses at the time of the survey (p=0.047). Among
this older group people were more aware of the actual controversy on vaccine safety (61.1%) than younger
group of patients (p=0.054). No other no significant differences between age groups were detected among
different questioned items regarding safety, efficacy or attitudes to COVID-19 vaccination.
CONCLUSION: A extremely high degree of acceptance for COVID-19 vaccination was reported. No factors were
related to vaccine acceptance or refusal. Medical staff are the most trustworthy source of information, far
above all other sources. Social networks and opinion leaders have not been shown to be significant influencing
factors in our population.
