Introduction: Hydatid disease is one of the neglected diseases according to the WHO with a high impact on public health caused by the cestode E. granulosus. In humans it is usually asymptomatic for a long time until clinical manifestations occur due to the size of the cyst. The first measures for its eradication were established in 1986 with good results, however, the need arises to know the status of the disease 30 years later after its implementation.
Objectives: To describe the state of hydatid disease in Spain in the last 20 years, emphasizing its epidemiology, aetiology, and clinical and therapeutic aspects.
Methods: Systematic review of the articles retrieved from the MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science databases.
Results and discussion: This disease presents an unequal distribution in Spain. Incidence date vary greatly between studies. Most of cases affect to liver and the most used treatment is based on surgery combined with anthelmintic drugs.
Conclusion: Despite the lack of precise information about the epidemiological situation of the disease in Spain, it can be ensured that it is still far from being eradicated and that therapeutic management is not agreed upon.
