Alcohol consumption in Spain exceeds the European average. 4.2% show problematic consumption. Self-deception plays an important role in the addiction process. Drug use is mediated by drugs risk perception.
Objectives: General: To analyze the risk perception and self-deception in ex-alcoholics. Specific objectives: 1- To analyze the relationship between the different factors of self-deception and risk perception, 2- To analyze the gender differences in both variables, 3- To analyze the differences in both variables according to marital status and 4- To analyze the differences of age in both variables.
Method: The study sample consisted of 50 former alcoholics (54.3 years ± 10.17; 24% women) who responded in a single measure to a sociodemographic questionnaire, the AMI-40 Self-deception Inventory and the Questionnaire of attitudes towards alcohol (CAA). Results: Former alcoholics with a higher risk perception of alcohol consumption indicated higher scores of self-deception when they consumed. Women have a higher risk perception. Single people have a higher risk perception towards drugs other than alcohol. People with a high school education level presented a higher risk perception towards alcohol and other drug use. Older people showed less self-deception and less risk perception.
Discussion: The data show the importance of work in self-deception for the rehabilitation of alcoholism. Couple proves to be source of support for addiction rehabilitation. A strong risk perception doesn't seem to be what maintains abstinence.
