Tratamiento informativo del suicidio en el diario digital El Mundo antes, durante y tras la pandemia

Abstract

El objetivo de la siguiente investigación es analizar la cobertura mediática que recibe el suicidio en la prensa, concretamente en el diario digital español El Mundo. Se llevará a cabo un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de un total de 43 artículos publicados en el diario El Mundo sobre el suicidio. Con el objetivo de centrar y acotar más la investigación, los artículos analizados corresponderán a los años 2019, 2020 y 2021 para apreciar cómo ha influido la pandemia de la COVID-19 en el tratamiento de este tema. A continuación, se mostrarán las diferencias entre los artículos publicados antes, durante y tras la pandemia. Los criterios a tener en cuenta en el análisis cualitativo son las diferentes recomendaciones que aporta la OMS para el correcto tratamiento del suicidio en los medios de comunicación. Esta metodología servirá para averiguar cómo ha cambiado la cobertura del suicidio en los últimos años y ahondar en si la pandemia mundial ha sido un factor determinante en los principales cambios. Asimismo, se conocerán los datos y cifras más recientes de muertes por suicidio en España. El propósito de esta labor es mejorar la cobertura mediática a través del uso de las recomendaciones hechas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud que se basan en principios éticos y deontológicos y se alejan del tabú, el sensacionalismo y el amarillismo. Esta mejora beneficiará la comprensión de la ciudadanía en artículos que informan sobre el suicidio.

The aim of the following research is to analyse the media coverage of suicide in the press, specifically in the Spanish digital newspaper El Mundo. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of a total of 43 articles published in the newspaper El Mundo on suicide will be carried out. In order to focus and narrow down the research, the articles analysed will correspond to the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 in order to appreciate how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the treatment of this topic. The differences between articles published before, during and after the pandemic will then be shown. The criteria to be taken into account in the qualitative analysis are the different recommendations provided by the WHO for the correct treatment of suicide in the media. This methodology will be used to find out how the coverage of suicide has changed in recent years and to delve into whether the global pandemic has been a determining factor in the main changes. It will also provide the most recent data and figures on suicide deaths in Spain. The purpose of this work is to improve media coverage through the use of recommendations made by the World Health Organisation that are based on ethical and deontological principles and move away from taboo, sensationalism and yellow journalism. This improvement will benefit the public's understanding of articles reporting on suicide.
