Abstract:
Theoretical Framework:The pharmacological treatment of Type 2 Diabetesconsists of the implementation of oral anti-diabetic drugs and/or insulin. This will depend on the characteristics of the patient and on the time of evolution of the condition. Derived from this statement, an attempt to determine if the time of evolution, sex, level of education, health locus of control and the implemented copingstrategies discriminate between individuals with Type 2 Diabetes that use insulin and that use oral anti-diabetics, was undertaken. Methods:A cross-sectional design was implemented and the Coping Strategy Questionnaire and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale were administered to a sample of 274 individuals with ages ranging 19 -78 years old. Results:A discriminant function analysis was run and a Wilks’ Lambda of 0.87 was obtained, associated to a Chi square 36.24, df 8, p<0.05, indicating that groups demonstrated means statistically significant in the predictor variables. The variables that exceeded a discriminant loading above the 0.30 criterion, were: time of evolution of the condition, level of education and theavoidance coping strategies. Regarding the percentage of classification, it can be observed that 71.2% of the cases were classified adequately. Conclusions:In front of more time with the condition, lesser levels of education, and higher implementation of avoidance coping strategies, there is a higher probability of insulin use. The aproximative coping strategies, the health locus of control and the sex were not significant predicctors for the type of drug treatment. This study contributes to eliminate some myths and prejudices regarding the use of insulin as a pharmacological therapy
