Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory infection that affects infants and young children between birth and two years of age, being the first cause of hospitalization in children under 12 months. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic a decrease in cases of this infection has been observed.
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the number of cases of bronchiolitis in the pediatric service of the San Juan de Alicante Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, taking into account the data of hospitalizations and visits to the emergency room of the cases of bronchiolitis that attended the San Juan de Alicante Hospital during periods of time from September to March since the year 2017 until 2022. The data collected were: Total number of cases that attended the emergency room and the number of cases that were hospitalized, sex, age, prematurity, causal agent, need for respiratory assistance (oxygen therapy) or not in the period of time of study in children under one year of age affected by bronchiolitis.
Results: The results showed that during the period 20-21 the cases decreased significantly (p<0.05) and that the infection attacks a greater number of boys in comparison with girls. Most cases of bronchiolitis during the prepandemic and postpandemic periods were caused by RSV (p<0.05). The percentage of bronchiolitis due to causes other than RSV was represented by adenovirus, metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and enterovirus. Specifically, the two cases of hospitalization during the pandemic period were caused by parainfluenza. It was observed that the majority of hospitalizations occured within the first 6 months of life and that there was a greater number of hospital admissions between the age from 0 to 2 months.
Conclusions: The measures imposed against the pandemic caused by the respiratory virus SARS-CoV-2 to prevent its progression have caused a decrease in cases of RSV bronchiolitis and their hospital admissions in the pediatric service of the San Juan de Alicante Hospital during periods of time in which they were imposed, observing their progressive increase after the lifting of these.
