Fundations: The incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing due to overdiagnosis. The increase is due to papillary microcarcinomas which have an excellent prognosis, so this has not translated into an increase in mortality. Material and methods: Patients who underwent surgery for thyroid cancer in the General Surgery Department of the HGUDB in the period 2015-2020 were analysed retrospectively. Some variables have been established and stored in a database. The data were collected using the ORION and ABUCASIS programmes. Results: Most of the variables analysed had results similar to those reported in the literature; however, risk factors such as obesity and diabetes mellitus were not found in a higher proportion in these patients than in the general population. Of all, 31 patients experienced a surgical recurrence, most of them appearing in the first two years after surgery. The presence of ultrasound lymphadenopathy at diagnosis was the variable most associated with an increased risk of surgical recurrence. Finally, significant differences were found in the surgical intervention performed at entry; in lymphadenectomy; in the Bethesda category; and in the number and amount of radioiodine doses between the group of patients who experienced a surgical recurrence and those who did not. Conclusions: In our population, thyroid cancer has similar characteristics to those reported in the literature. The variable most associated with an increased risk of recurrence was the presence of ultrasound lymphadenopathy at diagnosis.
