Introduction: More and more students decide to take notes in class using an electronic device. However, the consequences that this entails on aspects such as memory have not been sufficiently addressed, especially for the medical students. The objective of this research was to compare the differences derived from manual and electronic writing for taking notes in the students of Medicine degree from 2nd to 6th year of the Universidad Miguel Hernández.
Material and methods: A observational study was carried out by distributing a web-link for a cross-sectional online survey (Google Form) through the instant messaging software WhatsApp.
Results: All participants reported having either a computer or a tablet. It was found that taking notes by hand was associated with greater retention of information (χ²=42’03; p<0’05) and with better long-term memory (χ²=19’37; p<0’05), without statistical superiority for short-term recall (χ²=4’36; p=0’06). There was also no significant difference neither for the way of taking notes (processed or literal) (χ²=2’97; p=0’10), nor for the amount of information written down (p=0’84).
Conclusion: Students who used traditional handwriting related greater long-term memory than those who used electronic writing. Notwithstanding that, there were no differences in the amount of information written down.
