Socioeconomic development gerenates a growth in consumption and, as a consequence, an increase in waste generated, most of which accumulates in municipal landfills, affecting the environment and human health. Part of the waste disposed in landfills is bio-waste, i.e. organic materials potencially reusable, thus promoting a circular economy model. The objective of the research carried out is to check the suitability of certain organic materials coming mostly from activities related to the field, after characterizing them, in order to be used as growing media for crops. For this purpose, phytotoxicity and ecotoxicity assays are designed to gather data on how these materials could affect certain seeds of agronomic interest and how they can affect them when they reach water bodies as a consequence of runoff and leaching processes after their application in the environment. From the tests it was found that the materials with the best results in terms of ecotoxicity and germination index (GI, a biological indicator widely used in assays with seeds) are pine, sewage sludge compost and commercial compost, which are widely recommended as cultivation substrates. Olive stands out for its high toxicity both for germination studies and for the aquatic environment.
