The term overuse injury in sports refers to any condition due to repetitive movement that limits athletes to participate regularly in a competition or training. The highest point prevalence recorded in adult volleyball players was 61.51%. The movements that most trigger this type of injury are the serve and the spike, these being executed above the head. The most frequent pathologies are infraspinatus atrophy (AI), subacromial syndrome, and poor scapular statics. The high prevalence of shoulder overuse injuries demonstrates the need to develop prevention plans that are not yet being sufficiently implemented in this sport.
Objective: To know the most up-to-date scientific evidence regarding the prevalence and the different risk factors that trigger injuries, as well as which game roles are the most affected and the proposal for the implementation of exercises to prevent these pathologies.
Materials and methods: The searches were carried out in PubMed, Scopus, Web os Science and Embase databases.
Results: After the search, 10 articles exceeded the established inclusion and exclusion criteria and consequently were reviewed. Of these, six are cross-sectional observational studies, two descriptive epidemiological studies, one prospective cohort study and one randomized clinical trial.
Conclusion: The prevalence of injuries generated by shoulder overuse in adults is notoriously high, the most common risk factors are poor stability, a greater number of years of practice and muscular imbalances. Opposites tend to suffer more injuries. The throwing exercise with TheraBand is suitable to be included in preventive plans
