Background: Pubalgia is a painful condition of the pubic region that poses a constant challenge to the field of sports medicine due to its multifactorial cause. Groin pain in football players accounts for 8-18% of all injuries in football, occurring between 0.8 and 1.3 per 1000 hours of play and is due to a high demand for repetitive sprinting movements, explosive turns, changes of direction, kicking and acceleration/deceleration at maximum speed. In most cases the pain is of musculoskeletal origin, however, the treatment of choice remains a constant question for physiotherapists in charge of the pathology.
Purpose: To know the varieties and effectiveness of conservative physiotherapeutic treatments for the treatment of pubic or groin pain in football players. Material and methods: Searches were carried out in the Pubmed, PEDro and Cochrane databases, applying the search filter from 2011 to 2021, both years included.
Results: Nine studies were included in the review after passing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of the total, there were three case series, one of which was prospective, two single-blind randomised controlled clinical trials, two single-blind before-and-after clinical trials, one prospective randomised double-blind controlled study and one randomised clinical trial.
Conclusion: Manual therapy, multimodal treatment and active exercise programmes have achieved a significant decrease in pain and a return to sport within an average of 4 to 14 weeks, proving to be three types of effective conservative treatment for the management of pubalgia in football players. However, active exercise has been shown to be an essential part of the rehabilitation process in football players and should be incorporated despite the application of passive treatment.
