Introduction: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a neurological disorder in which following a previous noxious event there is an alteration of the body schema responsible for the onset of intense and disabling pain. Among the most innovative physiotherapy techniques is graded motor imagery, which, through its three phases, attempts to activate, regulate and normalise the cortical networks involved in sensorimotor processing.
Objective: To analyse the efficacy of motor imagery in people with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome according to current scientific evidence. Material and methods: A search of the existing references from 2000 to 2022 was carried out by combining a series of keywords with the Boolean operators AND and OR in the following databases: Pubmed, PEDro, Scopus, Embase and Science Direct. After passing the inclusion and exclusion criteria to a total of 309 articles, 25 studies were selected and their methodological qualities were evaluated with the PEDro, NOS or SCED scale.
Results: 16 studies, 4 observational studies and 5 case studies were analysed, with moderate methodological quality. The groups performing the imagery programme showed an improvement in function, pain and strength, although these were greater when combined with conventional treatment.
Conclusions: The sequentially applicance of this technique is beneficial in people with CRPS in both the short and long term as it gradually regulates and activates the different brain areas involved in motor action.
