Abstract:
Reduced ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) has been linked as a risk factor for various injuries. A decrease in this ROM has been demonstrated in football players over the course of a season, however, we are unaware of studies in referees. OBJECTIVES The objective was to compare the ROM of ankle dorsiflexion and posterior chain extensibility in referees in two different seasons and to study its relationship with the number of matches refereed. METHODS Seven referees and eight assistants participated. Measurements were taken in two different periods during the transition period. A Student's t-test and a correlation study were performed. RESULTS The comparison of dorsiflexion ROM and posterior chain extensibility in different seasons was not significant in any case. A correlation was found between these parameters and the number of matches refereed; highlighting the high correlation in the dorsiflexion of the dominant limb of referees (r= -0.78; p= 0.15). CONCLUSION No significant differences were found in the comparison of dorsiflexion ROM and posterior chain extensibility in the different seasons. We did observe that field soccer referees showed a reduction in ankle dorsiflexion of the dominant limb related to the increase in matches refereed during a season. Therefore, we recommend the use of a recovery programme for injury prevention.
