Introduction: Chronic neck pain (CNP) supposes a worldwide burden as it is the fourth major cause
of concern in health services. According to different studies, they are one of the most common
disorders among musculoskeletal injuries, that also generate a serious socioeconomic impact and
negatively affect all health status dimensions. Thus the necessity in the physiotherapy field to treat it
from a biopsychosocial perspective.
Objectives: The principal purpose of this study is to identify the health status areas that are most
affected in patients suffering from CNP. Methods: A bibliographic research has been conducted in the different databases that are Pubmed,
ScienceDirect, Scielo, Web of Science and Scopus resulting in studies published between the year
2011 and 2021.
Results: People who suffer from CNP, mainly women, have shown to be negatively affected in
different daily life aspects (laboral and recreational activities and social relationships) , but also in
emotional health (fundamentally depression), physical health (intensity of pain, sleep disorders and
inactivity). Conclusion: The impact that CNP has on the different health status dimensions of the patient proves
that there is a necessity to incorporate a biopsychosocial approach and therefore multidisciplinary. In
the physiotherapy field, it should be taken into account that the patients with CNP, in addition to
functional problems, also show psychological and social problems.
