Twitch has become a new tool for communicating and wanting to convey a message in the form of
audiovisual content to the public. The outbreak of the pandemic caused by COVID-19 and its
subsequent confinement has led to an increase in users of the platform, to such an extent that it has
become a worldwide social phenomenon, making the Twitch platform in Spain obtain large audience
shares that can compete with television, which has lost a sector of the public to this digital platform.
The main objective of this research is to explore whether Twitch has the potential to replace television
as the favourite entertainment medium in Spain and whether its current potential is due to its
confinement in the first pandemic period. It should also be noted that two hypotheses are proposed
which we will try to confirm throughout the research, these have to do with whether Twitch owes its
recent potential to confinement and whether it can take advantage of this potential to surpass television
in terms of audience.
As a result, it has been possible to analyse and provide answers to the objectives presented in this
work, as well as to reach conclusions that confirm the hypotheses put forward. These results have been
obtained thanks to the extensive bibliographical research explored and analysed for this work, as well
as the testimonies given by the interviews with professionals in the sector, which have also served as
a source of information, as well as the testimonies offered by more than a hundred people who know
the platform, from which valuable information has also been recovered. It is concluded that Twitch, as
a platform, is a potential competitor to television and that it owes its recent exponential growth to the
period of confinement caused by the pandemic.
