The city of Elche has had only one female mayor in the development of his municipal
politics. Mercedes Alonso García won the municipality, putting an end to thirty-two
consecutive years of a socialist government. The 2019 elections gave way to a new
Municipal Government formed by 12 socialists and two representatives of the Valencian
formation Compromís, achieving an absolute majority (14). This work focuses on analysing
the women who form part of the Municipal Corporation of Elche City Council, which, in
turn, is made up of 27 councillors. Of these 27, 14 are women compared to 13 men. The
municipal group with the most women in her political group is Partido Popular, which has
five, they are: Manuela Mora Pascual, María Dolores Serna Serrano, Inmaculada Mora
Madrid, Llanos Trigueros Martinez and María Elena Bonet Mancheño. The majority
governing group, the Socialist Party is divided into five men and six women: María José
Martinez Gutiérrez, Patricia Maciá Mateu, María Dolores Galiana Pérez, Ana María Arabid
Mayorga, Margarita Antón Bonete and Purificación María Vives Pérez. Compromís is made
up of one woman and one man. She is Esther Díez Valero. Ciudadanos is formed by a
single person, a woman: Eva María Crisol Arjona. Meanwhile, Vox has one man and one
woman: Aurora Rodil Martinez. The councilwomen of Elche in the XXI century is a way of
approaching the profile of Elche women through their political representatives. This work
reflects the most significant characteristics of the nine politicians who have volunteered to
participate with different education, ideology, beliefs and hobbies, but with a common
goal: to be part of the history of Elche.
