Hace años, aquel que padecía alguna enfermedad mental era tratado como un loco. Ahora, quien no se cuida dicha enfermedad es el considerado “loco”. ¿Qué ha ocurrido? Years ago, anyone suffering from a mental illness was treated as a madman. Now, anyone who does not take care of his or her illness is considered "crazy". What has happened? Mental health has gone from being a taboo subject to being present in everyone's daily life. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a considerably greater increase in its treatment than other issues. This is evidenced by its constant appearance in the media and, consequently, its social impact. Considering that the number of patients in need of psychological or psychiatric help has increased by 40% in recent years, it is not surprising that it is directly related to the virus that has changed the way we live. The line of research of this final degree project has focused on the study of private healthcare, in terms of mental health, in the town of Elche. Despite being a current topic, there is still no analysis of this calibre with the variables offered here. Whatever the reason, and it is clear that the pandemic has a lot to do with it, after many months of work, the only thing that is clear is the notorious destructuring of the Spanish health system. The lack of human, financial and material resources in this field reflects how much work lies ahead and how necessary it is for all of us to improve it.
Elche has 234,205 inhabitants and 98 clinical centres: this is its x-ray. With the participation of five testimonies and a survey of existing psychotherapy clinics, a series of current issues facing private health care in Elche are addressed in order to resolve a single question: Is the demand for private mental health care in the locality really covered?
