Background: Lung cancer (LC) is an important comorbidity that can complicate the prognosis of patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD). In 2018, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) proposed a new way of classifying ILD, according to its tendency to develop progressive-fibrosing ILD (PF-ILD) or not. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the quintessential example of PF-ILD. The pathogenesis of LC and IPF show similarities, although not all the mechanisms are known. The combination of both diseases is a healthcare challenge, due to the increased risk of mortality and also because of the treatment of LC, which carries additional risks in patients with underlying pulmonary fibrosis. Aim: To reclassify an ILD database into progressive-fibrosing and non-progressive-fibrosing phenotypes according to the new classification proposed by the ERS, analyze their characteristics and compare the incidence of LC and mortality in both.
Methods: Observational longitudinal analytical cohort study, retrospective in nature, in which patients diagnosed with ILD between 2012 and 2020 at the HGUA will be analyzed. They will be reclassified into two groups, depending on whether or not they meet the criteria for PF-ILD. Subsequently, its characteristics, the incidence of LC in both groups and survival rate will be analyzed.
