Abstract:

In the recent years a resurgence of the syphilis infection is observed, probably
connected to sociodemographical changes. This trend is probably related to the
improvement of prognosis in HIV patients after the introduction of high effective ART,
as well as the consequent increase of risky sexual behaviors because of a false sense of
security. The rate of syphilis and HIV coinfection in the US is around 15.7%, with
higher case rates in intravenous drug users (22.5-70.6%) and homosexuals (68-90%). In
Spain there are no major studies about coinfection and it is estimated around 13% of
HIV population. Although syphilis is a well-known and well-studied disease, there are
currently some new targets, especially in HIV population, in which syphilis is
underestimated. Coinfected patients present certain peculiarities in the clinical features,
serological diagnosis, and therapeutic management. However, recent studies do not support these differences, which could have relevance in the clinical management of
this group of patients, as well as in public health. The aim of our study is to establish
the possible effect of HIV infection and ART in the clinical and serological evolution of
Syphilis in coinfected patients.
