Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics, as well as the factors associated with severity and admission in the Intensive Care Unit of patients admitted to the Hospital de la Plana de Villarreal (Castellón), diagnosed with influenza in the 2017-2018 season.
Material and methods: We included 197 patients admitted to the Hospital de la Plana with confirmed influenza infection. Comparisons of clinical and demographic characteristics were made between patients admitted to the Intensive care Unit (ICU) and those who did not enter the unit.
Results: From October 1, 2017 to April 1, 2018 a total of 197 influenza admissions were reported. The median age of the admitted patients was 76 years (range of 19-95 years). 73% were over 65 years of age. Almost 90% of the admitted patients had at least one risk factor for severe influenza, with obesity (57.6%) being the most frequently associated comorbidity. 15 patients were admitted to the ICU, with an average age of 68 years and all of them had some risk factor for complicated influenza. A BMI> 30 kg/m2 was significantly associated with admission to the ICU. The most frequent complication documented was pneumonia.
Conclusions: The presence of obesity and other comorbidities, especially heart disease and chronic lung diseases, suggest the possibility of a worse influenza prognosis.
