Large wildfires are becoming more frequent mainly due to forest fuel accumulation and climate change. After these fires, in which vegetation is removed, the soil is unprotected against any erosive agent, in addition the hydrological processes can be altered. Early development of a biological crust can be key to prevent soil loss in the early stages after the fire. After seven months of the Beneixama fire, which occurred in July 2019, there is an incipient development of the moss-dominated biological crust (Funaria hygrometrica). The objective of our study is to assess the effects of the presence of mosses on the hydrology of the area affected by the fire. The infiltration capacity, hydrophobicity and stability of aggregates under different floor coverings (naked soil (SD), low moss (M)) were analyzed. Our results, in terms of infiltration capacity, show a tendency to find higher values in M, which can prevent erosion caused by surface runoff and accelerate ecosystem recovery. As for hydrophobicity, we find significantly higher values in M which may be fundamental to the spread of these mosses. Finally, the presence of moss has not led to an increase in total soil aggregation; the percentage of stable aggregates is higher in SD, although this may be related to the loss of less stable aggregates. To know more fully the importance of mosses in the recovery of disturbed environments it will be necessary to do a medium and long-term study taking into account the characteristics of each area.
