Forest fires have become a major threat to some soils in the Chilean Patagonia. 17,666 ha were burned in the 2011 wildfire in the Torres del Paine National Park. This study was conducted to assess the effects fire has in the soils of Torres del Paine. 69 samples from 5 areas with different vegetation cover (Patagonian steppe, Pre-Andean scrub and Magallanic forest) were analyzed. The soils were sampled at a depth of 5 cm and analyzed to determine their texture, organic matter content, water repellency, pH and electric conductivity. Burned and unburned areas had no differences in pH and electric conductivity, an average of 10.5% of organic matter was obtained with differences between burned and unburned areas, increases in areas 2 and 5, decreases in areas 1, 3 and 4. Hydrophobicity was, however, much higher than Mediterranean soils with a 75% of water repellent samples. As a result we have special concerns regarding the area 1 of the study, whose values of bare soil after nine years is still more than 30% and pursuant to the results that we have to date, we consider that the area 1 is the one more affected with the most noticeable to degradation. Further research will be required in order to know the microbiological conditions of the soils. Finally, the study of the Torres del Paine National Park will elucidate the situation of the affected areas in a medium-to-long term, contribute to avoiding mega-fires in the future, and determine -depending upon obtained results- which is the best post-fire management practice with regard to the impacts on the soils in the different areas.
