Jane Austen, contexto histórico y desigualdad de género a través de Emma

Abstract

Este trabajo es el resultado de un análisis del contexto histórico y roles de género existentes en la Inglaterra del siglo XIX a través de la vida de Jane Austen y los personajes de la novela Emma. La escritora sirve como claro ejemplo de las dificultades a las que se tenían que enfrentar las mujeres para conseguir un mínimo de independencia y libertad. En primer lugar, para contextualizar el trabajo, se presenta un recorrido histórico a través del feminismo, empezando con los primeros escritos de Poullain de la Barre hasta llegar al siglo XX, cuando las mujeres en Reino Unido pudieron votar por primera vez. Para continuar, se realiza un extenso estudio de la biografía de Austen donde se observa cómo, aunque pertenecía a una buena clase social, el rol de la mujer era el mismo: hija, esposa y madre. Se ha indagado a través de las cartas y escritos juveniles que a día de hoy se conservan, donde vierte todo tipo de cotilleos y opiniones sobre lo que acontecía en el mundo a sus hermanos. En ellas narra su día a día, describe detalladamente reuniones y fiestas que luego recreará en sus novelas e informa a sus hermanos de las últimas noticias sobre los habitantes de la ciudad. Algunos de estos documentos gráficos se hallan adjuntos en el apartado de anexos. Después, se exponen los personajes femeninos de la novela Emma, las principales críticas e hipótesis de género, sus relaciones sociales y el rol que desempeña cada una en la sociedad. Finalmente, en conclusiones, se expone el paralelismo entre Jane Austen y Emma Woodhouse haciendo hincapié en la situación social e histórica que vivieron. Se explica que la base de la igualdad de género vendrá de mano de la educación, como ya se veía en los escritos de Wollstonecraft o Mary Astell, para concluir finalmente con una cita de Charlotte Brontë acerca de la cuestión.

This work is the result of an analysis based on the historical context and gender roles in XIX century England using Jane Austen life and the characters of the novel Emma as a reference. The author life serves as an example of how hard it was for women to seek some independence and freedom. Firstly, there is presented some context about feminism and the first writings about it. Beginning with Poullain de la Barre and ending when women get to vote in the United Kingdom on XX century. In the second part, an extensive study of Austen's biography is presented, where it’s observed that even belonging to a high social class, the role of women was the same: daughter, wife and mother. Investigating through the letters and youth writings that are preserved today, where Jane talks all kinds of gossip and opinions about what was happening in the world to her siblings, in which she narrates her daily life, describes in detail the meetings and parties she’s assisting and that’ll be recreated in her novels and lastly informing about the last news in the village. Some of those documents are attached at the end of this work. Then, there is an assessment of the female characters in the novel Emma, a brief presentation of feminist criticism about it and the roles each character plays in society. Finally, in the conclusion is exposed the parallelism between Jane Austen and Emma Woodhouse, emphasizing the social and historical situation they lived through. Also, it’s explained that the basis of gender equality will come with an inclusive education, as already seen in the writings of Wollstonecraft or Mary Astell. The work concludes with a quote from Charlotte Brontë about the issue.
