One of the main problems of environmental health is the resistance that many microorganisms develop against biocides. Plants synthesize a large amount of chemical compounds that can be source of antimicrobial compounds. Some invasive plants could be an alternative to obtain these compounds due to their toxic or allelopathic properties and the large biomass they produce. In this study, the in vitro antifungal and antibacterial capacity of the invasive Eucalyptus globulus, Schinus molle, Schinus terebinthifolius and Zygophyllum fabago located in Elche, Spain, has been evaluated. The extracts were prepared with ethanol, acetone and methanol and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated against 6 fungal species (Alternaria sp., Aspergillus niger, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium sp. Phytophthora citrophthora and Sclerotinia sp.) and 3 bacteria (Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus epidermidis) by means of disk diffusion and direct extracts application methods. Excellent results were observed with Eucalyptus globulus against all fungal species, with 100% inhibition of P. citrophthora and the three bacteria tested. Schinus species showed inhibitory activity against the fungi Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium sp. and Phytophthora citrophthora and the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and to a lesser extent, Micrococcus luteus. Zygophyllum fabago extracts were less effective than the others, showing antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea and Phytophthora citrophthora while only the methanol extract had effect on Micrococcus luteus.
