The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the relationship between the use of the social networks Instagram and Facebook, social comparison and body dissatisfaction. The systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA protocol, selecting the databases PubMed, PsycInfo, Mendeley and Psicodoc. The search resulted in 19 articles, the quality of which was analysed using 12 risk of bias criteria. In a nutshell, the research evidenced the relationship between the use of image-based social networks Instagram and Facebook, social comparison and body dissatisfaction. Internalisation of the thin ideal of beauty, photographic activity, image editing and use of filters are highlighted as variables associated with increased network use, comparison and dissatisfaction. Some studies pointed to the role of social comparison as a mediating variable between social network use and body dissatisfaction. It was concluded that, although the results of cross-sectional and experimental studies pointed to negative consequences of network use on body satisfaction through social comparison, further experimental and longitudinal studies are pertinent.
