The purpose of the present research work is to analyze the treatment of the spanish press to the unaccompanied foreign minors (hereinafter also called menas). For that, a tracking has been made of all the publications that contained any allusion to this collective in El País, La Vanguardia, El mundo and ABC, the four most widely read national newspapers in Spain between October 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019, according to EGM (2020).
The objectives set consist of exposing the amount of information published on media about “MENA”, studying which is the habitual trend of the news, figuring out what topics are related with the “MENA” in the press, investigating who is given voice when the statements about them are collected and observe if certain deontological opinions of journalism are fulfilled. The methodology used for that consists of executing a detailed search on the digital newspaper archive of the four newspapers has been carried out and have been analyzed in a detailed way all the publications that threw the results by quantitative and qualitative parameters reflected on Excel tabs.
It was expected to find a large volume of publications about unaccompanied foreign minors in these media, which has been confirmed in a total of 155 articles in 92 days. In addition, the purposed assumptions have been verified: the majority of the news published have been negative, with the consequent stigmatization of “MENA”, associating them recurrently with the delinquency. The results of the research have determined that on rare occasions they are given a voice to themselves or to professionals with whom they live, while politicians and other sectors of society constantly appear in the statements collected by the press. Finally, it has been observed that in general terms the deontological opinions are achieved, although is an improvable aspect.
